Introduction to the
Strength
Deployment Inventory®
(SDI®):
Background, interpretation, and work-related
uses.
The SDI was developed in the 1970s
by Elias H.
Porter, Ph.D. Its basic premise is that individuals who understand
their own motivation and are aware of others' motivations will have
increased relationship awareness. The premises of relationship
awareness are:
1. We all do what we do because we
want to feel good about ourselves.
2. We tend to take two different
approaches to life:
-
When we feel that
things are going well, and
-
When we feel that we are faced with
opposition or conflict.
3. A "personal weakness" is no more or
no less than the overdoing or misapplying of a personal strength.
4. We naturally tend to perceive the
behaviors of others through our own motivational filter.
The SDI is a method to assist individuals in
understanding their own motivations when things are going well and when
faced with opposition or conflict. It measures both behavior and
motivations and values that underlie behaviors. This
self-awareness can then be used to understand others' motivations in a
number of Real World
Applications.
The SDI is widely used in the government
sector, including the Army and the Corps of Engineers.
